Students use internal models to explain the world around them. Sometimes these models are more or less correct, but what happens if they are not? How can we, as teachers, get into our students’ minds to identify and correct misconceptions? Let's attempt to find out!
This module will offer fun and engaging strategies for identifying misconceptions, determining their source, and effectively reversing those misconceptions. To do this, we will:
Explore three possible sources of misconceptions in science
Identify strategies to activate prior learning and identify misconceptions before starting a unit of study
Define cognitive dissonance and relate this to the reversal of misconceptions
Dive into three different strategies for reversing misconceptions in your lessons
